Morrisons uses Sedex to integrate ethical trade in its supply chain
I would recommend Sedex to any company with a large supply chain who want to spend less time on data management and more time acting to improve standards
Morrison Supermarkets Plc is the UK’s fourth largest food retailer and the second largest food manufacturer, with over 450 stores, 125,000 employees, 12 million customers a week and a global supply chain.
I would recommend Sedex to any company with a large supply chain who want to spend less time on data management and more time acting to improve standards.
The challenge for Morrisons
Morrisons’ customers expect them to take responsibility for fair working conditions and workers’ rights in their supply chain. The challenge is to make sure there’s consistent and effective management of that chain.
How Morrisons work with Sedex
Morrisons became a member of Sedex in 2013, and now require all their own-brand suppliers join Sedex too. They use the Sedex system to share and centralise supplier data, and improve transparency and global coverage.
A key benefit of Sedex membership for Morrisons is the reduction in the time it takes to generate the reports needed to monitor and communicate the effectiveness of their ethical trading strategy. They were previously compiling data manually; now, the Sedex reporting platform ‘Data Monitor’ makes their data easily accessible and quick to extract into a variety of reports. This helps them identify the suppliers that most need their help and frees up time for the team to work with them.
Morrisons are also working collaboratively with the Sedex Stakeholder Forum, the Ethical Trade Initiative and British Retail Consortium to consult, agree and implement ethical trading best practice.
We have a diverse and complex supply chain, so managing and interrogating the huge amounts of data this generates is a constant challenge.
The Sedex system enables us to collect, manage and analyse our supply chain data efficiently, freeing up resource to work more closely with our suppliers to deliver our ethical trading programme.
I would recommend Sedex to any company with a large supply chain who want to spend less time on data management and more time acting to improve standards.
