What was DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences’ stimulus for joining Sedex?
DuPont’s Nutrition and Biosciences business became a Sedex buyer/supplier member in 2008, as its procurement and sustainability teams felt there was a clear incentive to join Sedex to streamline requests for social and ethical data. Prior to joining Sedex, DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences would receive numerous requests for data from its customers, all using different frameworks and metrics. This resulted in duplication of effort for their production sites and sustainability team.
Sedex buyer/supplier membership also enabled DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences to gain visibility of its own supply chain, understanding the performance of suppliers and addressing issues.
What challenges has Sedex membership helped DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences overcome?
Sedex membership supports the goals of both DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences’ procurement and sustainability teams. Upon joining Sedex, DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences engaged its broader business to complete the Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) for over 60 sites, with over 100 SMETA audits being completed since they became a member. As a result of the data generated, DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences is able to create more awareness around certain subjects, such as challenges with overtime at certain sites. DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences’ membership also enables them to share data seamlessly every time they start doing business with a new customer – provided they are also a Sedex member.
DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences’ sustainability team is able to embed responsible and sustainable practices into their own business, as well as their supply chain. Using Sedex Advance, Sedex’s ethical data platform, the team share snapshots and reports quickly and easily with stakeholders across the business, including procurement teams, manufacturing and supply chain leaders.

As well as the SAQ and SMETA, DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences’ team has used Sedex’s risk assessment tool to understand their suppliers’ risk scores for specific raw material categories, so they can manage supply chain risk. This also helped them to benchmark themselves and review how their own site data might appear to their customers, helping them to understand how they are ranked against competitors.
