Our speakers

Justin King CBE, Vice Chairman, Terra Firma

Justin was the CEO of Sainsbury’s between 2004 and 2014, where he led the business through a major turnaround which led to nine years of profit growth. Before joining Sainsbury’s, Justin was Head of Food at Marks & Spencer. He held prior roles at Asda, Haagen-Dazs, PepsiCo and Mars in a thirty year career spanning consumer goods and grocery retailing.

Justin has previously served as a director of Staples Inc and as a board member of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and was on the audit committee of both organisations. He was also a member of the UK prime Minister’s Business Advisory Group.

After his career in FMCG and Retail, Justin joined Terra Firma in 2015.  He is currently Vice Chairman and acts as an advisor to the General Partner.  In addition, he sits on the boards of Annington and Everpower.

In 2019, Justin completed the sales of the two Terra Firma businesses he chaired, Wyevale and Santander/Brighterkind, having led their successful turnarounds.

Outside of Terra Firma, Justin has been on the Public Interest Board of PWC since 2015 and joined Marks and Spencer as a Non-Executive at the start of 2019.

Also in 2019, Justin launched and now Chairs the Made by Sport (MBS) Charity with founding Ambassadors HRH, The Duke of Sussex, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams.  MBS champions the power of sport to change young lives and works closely with the Sport for Development Coalition which represents the scores of charities and organisations that share this goal.

Justin received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Bath, and in 2009 the University of Bath awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration. Justin was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2011.

Justin is well known for his interest in motorsport and enjoys combining his passion for cars and spending time with his family. He served as interim Chairman of the Manor racing Formula One team, overseeing its recovery from administration in 2014, and his son, Jordan, is an international racing driver.

Aarti Kapoor, Managing Director, Embode

Aarti Kapoor is the Managing Director of Embode, an independent human rights consultancy working on the ground with corporate supply chains to tackle social issues across Asia and Africa. Aarti has almost 20 years’ experience working on human rights issues, with a focus on forced labour, child labour, human trafficking, and fair recruitment. This has included positions developing national government policy in the UK, implementing programmes in Asia and carrying out strategic research assignments across the globe. Aarti is known in the sector for her analytical mind and capability to think strategically and systemically. She is qualified as a lawyer in both the UK and US and holds Masters degrees in Law and Economics, as well as Systems Leadership and Organisational Analysis.

Dr. Jessica Green, CEO & Co-Founder, Phylagen

Dr. Jessica Green is the CEO and co-founder of Phylagen – a technology company that has found a way to sequence the DNA of dust and microbes and use the resulting data to trace where things come from. Potential applications include origin testing in multiple sectors including retail and apparel, agriculture, customs and border protection and cracking down on brand counterfeits.

Dr. Green has almost 20 years’ experience contributing to advancements in microbiome science, with highly cited articles in Nature and Science. She co-founded the Biology and Built Environment Center at the University of Oregon and is on the Science Advisory Board at the Santa Fe Institute. She has received numerous awards including a Blaise Pascal International Research Chair, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and a TED Senior Fellowship.

Jessica earned an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, both at the University of California, Berkeley.

Simon McCalla, CEO, Sedex

Simon joined Sedex as Chief Executive Officer in early 2019 and is responsible for leading the strategic vision for Sedex, its members and the global Sedex team. He has 25 years of experience in retail, infrastructure and supply chain technology roles, working within companies including Adams Childrenswear, Next, Nominet, Volvo, Warner Bros and The White Company.


Simon is passionate about enhancing the efficiency and transparency of the supply chain and protecting the people working in it. He serves Sedex members by building and delivering the products and services to do this and be the catalyst for positive change in responsible sourcing.

Rona Starr, President & CEO, APSCA

Rona Starr is the President & CEO of the Association of Professional Social Compliance Auditors (APSCA), joining in August 2016. She oversees the organization’s development and the advancement of APSCA’s mission to enhance the professionalism and credibility of the individuals and organizations performing independent social compliance audits.

Prior to joining APSCA, Rona worked for McDonald’s for 21 years in a variety of roles. She was part of the roll out of McDonald’s social compliance program within Asia in 2002; and became the global lead in 2009.  In 2010, she gathered the audit firms used by McDonald’s together to form an advisory board to focus on improvement within the industry.  From there, numerous projects were undertaken, which included the implementation of a train the trainer program for auditors where she travelled the world to ensure calibration and continuous improvement among the service providers – which included many of the now APSCA member firms.

Rona is an accomplished and globally networked business leader with the capacity to influence at all levels of an organization. A specialist in transformational environments, she has defined expertise in risk management across emerging markets, combining a track record of success in supply chain management, administration, international business coordination and workplace compliance.

Starr has a MBA from the Australian Institute of Business.

Olivia Murphy, Sustainability Manager, Whitbread PLC

Olivia Murphy is Sustainability Manager at Whitbread PLC. Responsible for managing Whitbread’s responsible sourcing programme; including the ethical audit programme, sector engagement, commodity work, modern slavery mitigation and annual assessment of risk across the supplier base. Olivia’s passion lies in supplier engagement that goes beyond audit, working collaboratively with suppliers to understand the risks and issues that they face to create an environment of improvement.

Katryn Wright, Advisor, Better Business Behaviour

Katryn Wright focuses on leveraging behavioural science to address common business and human rights challenges and behaviour change initiatives. She is an independent consultant who runs workshops and webinars for companies and advises Shift’s Valuing Respect Project on how behavioural science can support better monitoring and evaluation. Katryn has over 10 years experience in the business and human rights field, having led programmes to inform the practical day-to-day implementation of corporate respect for human rights and to engage companies from the emerging and developing markets for the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights (GBI). Katryn has a Masters degree in International Politics and completed the ‘Behavioural Science in Practice’ Executive Education Course from the Behavioural Insights Team and Warwick Business School. Yakut Oktay, Social Programmes Lead, Amfori

Yakut has been working in social sustainability for 8+ years, in functions such as on-site assessment, programme coordination & management, and quality control. She has developed the amfori BSCI Audit Quality Programme, and supported the amfori team in managing the quality of the amfori BSCI audits globally. On top of her hands-on knowledge of the EMEA region, she manages and supports technical projects in South Asia and South East Asia regions, and provides guidance to amfori teams and members on global social sustainability trends and emergencies. In her current role, she manages the amfori social programmes with an aim to make them future-fit.

Farid Baddache, CEO & President, Ksapa

Ksapa provides scalable innovative solutions that help companies and investors to build more resilient, more inclusive yet more competitive operating models through strategic advice, impact investing solutions, and advocacy.

Farid Baddache knows how to leverage Environmental, Social and Ethical performance, to innovate and improve competitiveness of assets and business operations. Global profile with +20 year experience in sustainability combining corporate experience (consumer sectors, industries), NGO, academic, development, and consulting. Former Managing Director at BSR for 10+ years. BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) is a global nonprofit organization that works in consultancy, research and collaborative programs with a network of more than 250 member companies. Farid has designed and implemented programs for 150+ clients across 100+ countries. Farid Baddache is member of several stakeholder panels, think tanks, impact investment funds, and is board member of impact investment funds.

Mostafiz Uddin, Managing Director, Denim Expert Ltd. Founder & CEO, Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE)

Mr. Mostafiz Uddin is the Managing Director of Denim Expert Ltd – an internationally renowned, cutting edge, fully integrated, environmentally sustainable and social responsible compliant garment manufacturing plant based in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

He is a visionary entrepreneur in the development of sustainable apparel systems.  He is personally driven by social and environmental ethics and is recognized to be a game changer through the introduction of sustainable practices, innovation and fashion disruption, which he sees as keys to the future of the Bangladesh apparel.

Mr. Mostafiz founded the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE) to promote sustainable practices within the Bangladesh apparel industry and to raise the country’s image through different initiatives under the banner of BAE, including the Sustainable Apparel Forum (SAF), the Bangladesh Fashionology Summit (BFS), Innovation Week Dhaka and Bangladesh Denim Expo. Through these endeavours he strives to promote the advance of sustainable practices, including environmentally sound production methods, full transparency, innovation, circularity and technology.

Mark Taylor, Strategy & Global Partnerships Director, Issara Institute

Mark Taylor is the Director for Strategy and Global Partnerships at the Issara Institute.  His professional business consulting and investment background and prior work with supply chains and private sector development initiatives in Asia is shaping the direction of Issara’s Business and Human Rights, Ethical Recruitment, and Inclusive Labour Monitoring (ILM) work.  Mark lived and worked in Southeast Asia for over 15 years, and is now based in California.

Prior to joining Issara, Mark was the Regional Advisor for the Australian government’s private sector and rural development aid programs across mainland Southeast Asia.  He has held senior technical and leadership positions including as Managing Partner of Emerging Markets Consulting, a regional business consulting firm specializing in strategy and private sector development, and Chairman of the Board for Emerging Markets Entrepreneurs, one of Cambodia’s first business accelerators.  Mark has led dozens of supply chain, value chain, and industry competitiveness assessments for the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and USAID, has been a mentor for SMEs and social enterprises, and worked with impact investors and a Southeast Asia private equity fund. In the USA, Mark worked at the World Bank and for several start-up technology firms in the Silicon Valley and Seattle.

Mark holds an MBA from Georgetown University and is a Landegger Honors Program graduate from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service.

Magali Martowicz, Director of Responsible Sourcing, Sedex

Magali Martowicz is Sedex’s Director of Responsible Sourcing. Magali is passionate about making a genuine difference in the lives of workers and brings 12 years of responsible sourcing experience with her. Prior to joining Sedex in 2019, she spent close to 10 years at Impactt, a leading UK ethical trading consultancy and has worked as a consultant for the ILO and the Inter-American Development Bank.

At Sedex, Magali leads the development of the responsible sourcing function, from strategy through to delivery , including our star products such SMETA and Risk Assessment Tool – Radar. Magali holds a MSc in Development from the London School of Economics and a Masters in Management from SKEMA, a leading French business school.

Rosey Hurst, Founder and Director, Impactt Limited

Rosey founded Impactt in 1997 with the mission of improving the lives and livelihoods of workers worldwide by using the positive power of global supply chains, and has since led multiple innovations in ethical trade and worker rights. She founded Sedex and the Local Resources Network, pioneered and normalised the use of participatory techniques in China, and devised the Benefits for Business and Workers Programme in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

In the UK, she led the secretariat of the Temporary Labour Working Group, the precursor to the GLAA.  In Bangladesh, she worked with Awaj Foundation on building workers’ negotiation capability, and in the UK and Europe is using social psychology techniques to re-humanise relations in the workplace.

Rosey serves on the Ecovadis Technical Committee and is a member of the Responsible Investment Advisory Council at BMO-GAM.

Peter McAllister, Executive Director, Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI)

Peter McAllister is Executive Director of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a leading alliance of companies, trade unions and NGOs that promotes respect for workers’ rights around the globe.

ETI works with its members to improve working conditions in global supply chains, recognising that these are complex and challenging, and are best tackled through collaborative efforts. Peter joined ETI in October 2010 and has led the development of a demanding new strategy that seeks to transform the way business approaches workers’ rights, demonstrating impact for workers and value for business.

He has spent almost 30 years engaged in international development and rights-based initiatives around the world, including seven years setting up the Geneva-based International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) and 13 years with the international development NGO CARE.

Phil Marshall, Director, The Mekong Club. Private Sector Engagement Lead, Research and Communications Group

Phil Marshall is the Private Sector Engagement Lead for the Research and Communications Group and a Director of The Mekong Club, a Hong Kong-based NGO working with business to combat modern forms of slavery exploitative labour practice. He has two decades of experience working against human trafficking and other forms of exploitative labour practice, spanning criminal justice responses, support for victims and situational-based prevention, as well as high-level policy work aimed at better aligning responses with accumulated knowledge and lessons learned.

Phil’s current work includes a focus on exploitative worker recruitment processes, including research on migrant realities in South-East Asia, development of monitoring, complaints and remedy mechanisms, and improving availability of accurate information to migrants and other parties in the recruitment process. He has a particular interest in ensuring that programmes reflect the priorities of migrants themselves, promoting cohesive interventions along migration pathways, and opportunities for crowding out exploitative practice through better policy and the provision of viable alternatives for both migrants and business.

Annelise Thim, Women's Empowerment Manager, Business for Social Responsibility (BSR)

Annelise works with BSR members across sectors to promote women’s empowerment through consulting, collaboration, and research. She supports the work of the Business Action for Women collaborative initiative.

Prior to joining BSR, Annelise worked at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), where she led the OECD Policy Dialogue on Women’s Economic Empowerment, a global multi-stakeholder community committed to promoting women’s economic empowerment. Her research focused on identifying barriers to women’s economic empowerment, women’s unpaid care work, and time use. During her time at the OECD, she worked on the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI), conducted research, and led trainings on social norms and gender equality. She also worked closely with bilateral donors to ensure that their development programming supported gender equality and women’s empowerment and worked on issues such as combatting sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment.

Annelise holds a M.A. in International Relations from the American University of Paris and a B.A. in International Affairs and French from the University of Georgia.
